Here is what I accomplished this weekend. The main half-timber is now sanded down to new wood. If you are thinking it doesn't look like I did much, you will want to keep that thought to yourself. This old growth wood is hard as a rock. A really hard rock.
In the next day or so, I'll hit it with Boracare, primer and paint.

About the hardness of that wood, I believe you. Totally. Sandsandsandsandsandsandsandandsandsomemore. . . Tedium isn't half the word for it.
Extra points for anything done on a ladder ;-)
You are amazing, Stucco! What a huge accomplishment. It's going to be perfect, I'm sure.
Did you ever find an exact match to your back band? I need some, too. I'm pretty sure it's the same as yours. Would they have something like that at the Reuse Center?
Cristina
That looks great! Did you strip the paint before sanding?
Wow, I can't say I've ever noticed that half timbering detail on your house. That's going to look really nice when you get some paint on it..
Thanks for the encouragement.
Spayurdog - I did find a match for the backband locally. It is not without it's issues. But I'm having it installed soon. I'll write a post about it. Siweks lumber has it. Their product code is "PBB1." The Reuse Center didn't have it in the year or so I looked for it. It think it gets destroyed in the removal.
Barbara - I did strip the paint before sanding. I didn't want all that lead flying through the air. I started with a heat gun but ended up using chemical stripper.
Omar - My pics to this point have probably strategically left them out ;)
