A quick post with photos of the spice rack that I'm having replicated with my new kitchen cabinet. My version will be more narrow due to space constraints and made out of birch.
This spice drop-down shelf is my mom's. She bought it 40 yrs ago as an "after market" add-on from Sears. In the photo, it looks like it sticks down a little mopre than it does because I was taking the photo at cabinet level. It actually is pretty hidden.
I searched high & low on the internet for the past 6 years and never saw a drop down spice rack anywhere.
I have to admit, along with the little flour bin & pull out cutting board....this is one of the items on the cabinet I am most excited about.

How does that stay in the upright position? Very cool idea that I've never seen before!
Do I miss having a flour bin! What do people do to keep reasonable amounts of flour on hand without a bin? It looks ridiculous to have 2-3 canisters.
Mmmm... Penzeys! And I like that clever cabinet, too.
Shane & Casey - There is a little latch on the front of it that hooks to a catch on the cabinet above.
Karen Anne - Funny,I've always lived in a place w/ a bin (my kitchen now actually has a large flour bin that was converted to shelves). Last week my mom & I discussed if we would actually use a bin for flour (I may keep bagged coffee in my new mini-one). My grandmother always had a big bin in use, but she went through flour really fast. Wonder how they kept the bugs out?
Josh - Got to love Penzeys. Those spices were part of my Christmas gift to my mom last year ;-) I'm totally addicted to their sugared ginger. It's like crack to me.
Whole Foods here makes a cranberry ginger bread that has sugared ginger pressed into the top. And our local supermarket sold Irish soda bread with sugar crystals pressed into the top. Nom nom.
Karen Anne - I haven't really even begun to explore it's sues...right now I'm stuck on eating to straight. Starbucks did make a gingerbread drink and put a spoonfull of the sugared ginger on top. We'll blame them for my addiction.
This may be a pain, but I thought I might as well ask. Sometimes bloggers like typing away about details that might be "a pain" to someone else. Could you tell us more about your mom's spice rack and your new one. What are the dimensions for each, for instance? We are painting our kitchen cabinets right now and I'm brainstorming about how to make the most of our recently reduced kitchen space (new house). Spices have been one of my favorite things to daydream about, lol. Currently, I have a plan for shelving about my range, but your little idea might just change all that!
Thanks!
Jacci
Jacci - I apologize for taking so long to post this. My mom's cabinet is 12.5" w by 12.5" l by 2.5" h. It sits under the cabinet above it..shows about 1" below the cabinet. I hope that helps! Let me know what you end up deciding to do in your kitchen.
