The Holy Grail

Unproductive day.  I went to Guilded Salvage and City Salvage looking for vintage cabinet latches to match my existing.  No luck either place.  Not even close.

Seems that unless it has fancy Victorian styling....or is a Stickley style Arts & Carfts piece, it doesn't make it to salvage.

I still have a few more places to visit, but hope is dwindling.

I've also developed a Plan B just in case.  More on this later.

Too bad Guilded Salvage didn't pan out. I know what you mean about the fancy stuff, I always just figured the plain stuff was so popular it sold right away, but you may be on to something. City salvage has some cool stuff, but everytime they have anything I need they think it is gold and mark it WAY up.
Good luck

Dutch House - I like Guilded because it's organized. But, I never have luck there looking for specific items I need. For whatever reason I always end up having some odd conversation w/ the guy from City - this time he tried to talk me into reproductions. I still prefer Northwest - disorganized, but they have a ton of stuff. The place I really like is out in Portland, OR. - wish I had an upcoming business trip.....

I imagine you already do this but ... you know to walk the alleys don't you? Or drive them. On recycle day or the day before.

(This is why it's good to have a dog. Required walking can be done in the alley.)

It's probably not a particularly time-efficient approach to salvage shopping but it can turn up those things people think no one wants. And there are still many people in South Minneapolis who can't imagine why anyone wants all that old stuff. But you knew that.

(p.s. would the Portland place be open to a phone call and emailed picture? Maybe they'd mail it to you or hold it for your next trip.)

Just some thoughts.

What about Architectural Antiques? Prices can be high, but their selection is huge. Decent selection of plain stuff too.

Bungled - Yup they are still on the list. Also, Bauer Bros. The pressure is off a little cuz, I located the hinges (I wanted the carpenter to put the hinges on). The latches can be the last thing. But, I'm still looking....
